Baby Massage

Some of the most intimate and deeply communicative moments between you and your baby are probably spent in utter silence as you stroke a back, smooth a belly or run a finger under the arch of a tender baby foot. Infant massage is a natural for most parents. A baby body rub is composed of gentle touching and smooth strokes with full palms. It sounds simple but a well-schooled touch can actually increase metabolic efficiency, speed the development of an infant's GI tract and lungs and reduce the muscle tension that results from exercising all those newly acquired motor skills.

Massage is not only a great way to heal relax and sooth, but also an excellent way to bond with your baby. Baby massage, along with breastfeeding, is the most fulfilling form of nurturing you can give your child. Baby massage builds a bond of love and caring that both parents can experience, especially daddy who may be feeling left out while mum breastfeeds.

Massage provides so many benefits. It aids digestion, relieves colic, eases tension, regulates breathing, spurs growth and it is also said that massage stimulates baby's brain encouraging growth & development. It offers your infant not just the comfort and stimulus of touch, but a full range of enriching experiences . . . eye contact, a soothing voice, a familiar scent.

If you recite the part of the body you are massaging, your child will learn the words and develop an early awareness of his/her body. They may not repeat the words, but they will know what you're talking about.

How to get started

All you need to start your own baby massage session is a blanket, some towels, a nice oil blend (like Baby's bedtime massage) and the right attitude. The strokes matter less than your intention, which should be calm and loving. Go with whatever moves your baby seems to enjoy, stop any move he doesn't like and follow his cues as to whether the rub should be silly or soothing. Some babies will be serious when you massage them because they are intent on learning something new, Some will be laughing like it's a game. In either case, meet them where they're at for a positive, joyful experience.

You can perform a full massage on your baby anytime you have about 20 minutes to spare. If you don't have the luxury of that block of time very often, simply work on one body part at a time. Whatever you do, keep your touches slow and rhythmic, like a lullaby.
